Hello!
Elephant! (Better big.) I decided that 23 was going to be a good year. & it was, by jingo!
In the year I was 23, I...
moved to Melbourne, Australia
started my own business
visited San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Nevada & Norway for the first time, visited London for the second time & visited Sydney for the third time
attended Burning Man (something I had wanted to do for about 5 years) & met a heap of amazing people
had a half-sleeve tattoo done by my favourite ever tattoo artist (& one of the best people i've ever met)
fell in love with NYC & stayed in the Chelsea Hotel in NYC
dyed my hair pink, then purple
owned my first pair of Manolo Blahniks
stopped biting my nails
totally re-routed my personal psychology & became a completely different person !!!
got a Macbook & a digital SLR camera for my birthday
was invited to another city to be the "guest of honour" at a fashion blogger's meet
was headhunted by a magazine with a circulation of 800,000 Australia-wide, aka Cosmopolitan, started writing a monthly fashion column for them & met everyone in the office :>
met, or otherwise made the acquaintance of lots of people I had known of/respected for a long time, i.e. the Manolo, Violet Blue, Audrey Kitching, Tarina Tarantino, John Halcyon Styn!
appeared in a few magazines (other than Cosmo) o_O
hung upside down & did a catch on a trapeze!
pole-danced at Burning Man & kicked my friend in the head with my boot :D
learned how to make really good cupcakes
started getting recognised in the street...
enjoyed every day of work I did (!!!)
received a media pass for Melbourne fashion week, went to the most fabulous events & sat in the media riser (situated RIGHT at the end of the catwalk)!
My birthday is Thursday the 13th of September, & after that, I will be 24. Needless to say, I am very excited about what life has in store for me! @!#%^*&)(^*&^%@!!!
Here is my birthday wishlist. A bit late, but hey. FOR POSTERITY!
A year-long subscription to a florist where you tell them what kind of flowers you like & they deliver you a fresh bouquet every week (I don't even know if this exists); Flowerbomb (Viktor & Rolf) eau de parfum; Sex by Madonna; YSL Touche Éclat; Borba skincare gummi bears; Tarte inside-out vitamin lip gloss in Apple-A-Day!; Tarina Tarantino crystal & lucite heart necklace in violet (& matching earrings!); carousel mini-shorts from Peter Alexander; Moroccan tea glasses; a plane ticket to New York (with a stop-off in Tokyo & no return flight!); Hello Kitty "shoulder massager" set of 6; Chanel round half-tinted sunglasses; & a super-cute dachshund (following in the fine footsteps of Ms. Dorothy Parker as well as Pablo Picasso & Joan Crawford)!
Additionally: anything from my Amazon wishlist; a girl in a cake (preferably Manko); a personal assistant (tasks would include answering my phone, collecting the mail, bringing me delicious beverages & massaging my back); pink glittery cupcakes; a vintago kimono (for lounging after bathing); magazine subscriptions (French Vogue, Elle UK, i-D, Nylon, Lula, Paper, W, the list goes on...); a membership to the Soho House; kisses & dancing.
"Very often, Gala, when tides start turning, great gears begin shifting, and gusting winds start blowing at the onset of a really wonderful dream's alignment with your present life, there is commotion, unpredictability, even turmoil. So, hey, let's always assume that's the case whenever you experience commotion, unpredictability, even turmoil. K? Whhh-hhh-hh-h-h-h-ish- The Universe" From here: Expression: 50 / 5 You use life changes like rungs on a ladder. Growth, variety, beginnings and endings are constant elements in your life. You are able to let go of anything or anyone in order to further your growth. Because of this ability, coupled with a talent for translating new ideas into logical, useful explanations, you would make a great teacher and/or writer. Travel is something you are made for, even if only through your mind.
Soul Urge: 12 / 3 Your urge is to bring hope, joy and beauty to all you meet. You feel the best when you are in beautiful and comfortable surroundings. You have a creative essence and use your inspiration and imagination to make others happy. You enjoy attention and admiration, and you desire recognition for your talents.
Personality: 38 / 11 / 2 You have a very neat, composed appearance to the outside world. Peaceful and unobtrusive, you are the one people go to for companionship and harmony. You seem to have a quiet, non-judgmental wisdom which attracts those needing advise and an objective point of view. Your ability to see both sides of a situation makes you appear indecisive.
Personality: 11 Some may detect a glow around you and feel drawn to you by fate. The glow is a reflection of the refined and inspirational energy that courses through you, seemingly from other worlds. You may be an artistic genius or any other kind for that matter, but one thing is for sure, you have a powerful effect on anyone who enters your life. You are not afraid to recreate yourself as is necessary at your accelerated pace and other people follow your example becoming more of who they really are.
Old journal entry; 2005.
"i want to do something worthwhile. selling soap & bath bombs & cosmetics, while fun, isn't life-changing. i want to write & publish. i want to have a writing party on top of a building where all the incredible people get together with a bunch of typewriters & write frantically, & when the page is finished it gets thrown over the balcony into the masses of people in suits, the kids at school who are wondering what the fuck they can do now, the thronging traffic, the people who need it. i want thundering manifestoes, overflowing, i want to stick them to traffic lights & spray them on sidewalks. i know that lives can be changed through tiny words, shiny like beads, strung into a sentence. i want to be part of things, only i don't know where to begin. so show me." I like to envision myself walking around the iCiNG Bowl, with a row of ladies in tight sweaters with cat's eye glasses typing furiously at beautifully restored typewriters. There would be seven of them, & their typewriters would be red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo & violet. Their sweaters would match & on them would be pinned a glittery diamante brooch of their first initial...
Pitchers~!
Melbourne from the top of a ferris wheel. Nadia loves babies~ Steering the teacup. YES, it matches my outfit. NOT A COINCIDENCE. Back page of Cosmo! (How much would you pay to advertise here? THOUSANDS.) Big (readable) version here! So fucking cool. I bought a new dress from Country Road & I LOOOOVE it. An outfit~ I can almost pretend I'm at Burning Man by looking at this photo. *Bump!* We went swimming~ Mushroom! Again! I was in front of a lightbox making shapes & this is how they came out on the screen projected in front of it... ( view big) I'm so maternal. Baby Love exhibition. It is weird. If you are in Melbourne, you should go. Riiiiide it, my ponnnnnny~ On the ferris wheel! PEACE OR BUST! My media pass for Motorola Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. (Yeah, try saying THAT three times quickly.) On Sunday night, I went to the opening night party... lots of beautiful people in the Langham hotel, amazing food, psychedelic carpet. Fabuleux.
Here's what I wore... This is how close I was to the runway at the shows. FASHION IZ SERIOUS BUSINESS~ Work it giiiiirl... It's really funny, I have always said (on iCiNG anyway) that I'm not really interested in runway fashion. & then I look at my front page, & it's all show coverage. Like, huh? I guess I forgot about that until I was in the front row & thinking, 'what the hell am I going to write?'. When invitations are flying at you thick & fast & you're marking things down in your calendar, it is REALLY easy to get swept away in the whole nuttiness of fashion week. But, of course, the real style of the people in the audience is always far more interesting than what's happening on the catwalk.
I need to remember: I am interested in style, not fashion.
There is a reason why I always scroll through all the show coverage in Google Reader! When people start catering to your ego, it is easy to forget your core, & what you're trying to achieve. Anyway, lesson learned! Saturday was Fawn Gehweiler's exhibit...
This is what I wore! Gosh! AAAAAARGHHHHH~ (etc.!) Fun Facts:
I have two awesome boys (Alxndr & Timmy Crunk) from Wellington & Auckland respectively coming to visit me soon, one in October & one in November... it's going to be sooooo muuuuuch funnnnnn! It's starting to get really warm over here & I am PSYCHED for summer. The weather here is amazing for about 9 months of the year. I am an old fogey. Talking about the weather. PSHAWW.
Birthday next week! Plans: collect 2 dozen pink glittery cupcakes, have photoshoot (Simon is my official paparazzo, it is going to feature my kimono, big hair, candy floss, a little bottle of champagne & a straw), enjoy my mother's home cooking (I have asked her to do a roast chicken for my birthday), open presents...
"Hopelessly Devoted To You" is unabashedly the worst song in all of Grease. "Sandy" is bad too, but there is a hot-dog jumping into a bun behind him, & so it is okay. Plus, bum-chin! Eeee!
My friends from Battle Circus are flying me over to Auckland in a month to star in their new music video! V. excited! It's going to be suuuuper-cool, plus they are all adorable & lots of fun. The video has something to do with the end of the world/apocalypse. OooOooOoOooooOOooh! I asked my parents if they were going to be in Auckland & they said no but that they would come up anyway. Haha.
My pyjama pants are too big. I am sleeping a lot at the moment. I have octopus ink-coloured nailpolish. I love the new Juicy Couture ads. I love Si-moon too.
Okay, c'est tout!
Hearts & bubble gum & sticky pink kisses,
